The Psychedelic Furs are a post-punk/new-wave fusion group that achieved commercial success in 1980. After signing with Columbia Records, they released their self-titled debut album in spring. Defined as one of the greatest albums released in 1980 by Rolling Stone, the record spawned the hit singles “We Love You” and “Sister Europe.” The album performed impressively on the charts in the U.K. and attained moderate success in the U.S., entering the Billboard 200 chart. The following year, the band dropped their career-defining record containing the iconic hit “Pretty In Pink.” Talk Talk Talk may have gained less momentum in the U.K., but over in the U.S., the album broke into Billboard 200’s Top 100. Meanwhile, tracks “Dub Waiters” and “Into You Like a Train” entered the U.S. National Disco Action Top 80.

By 1982, The Psychedelic Furs have become one of the fastest-rising stars in the new-wave music industry. Forever Now peaked at number 20 in the U.K. and soared to 61 in the U.S. The album spawned the song “Love My Way,” which also entered the charts in four other countries. While making the album, the Fur collaborated with renowned music producer Todd Rundgren, who also performed some keyboard and saxophone tracks. Forever Now later sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S., earning a gold certification. After their phenomenal international breakthrough, The Furs continued to perform remarkably on the chart for their subsequent albums. In 2020, the band released their latest album, Made of Rain. The record peaked at number 13 in the U.K. and entered the charts in four other countries.

English pop rock and punk band Squeeze has had a phenomenal five-decade career. The band emerged in 1974 and went through two hiatuses, but they remain active to this day. The band has released 15 studio albums, two of which were certified gold in Canada and Australia. In 1979, their sophomore effort Cool for Cats broke into the U.K. chart peaking at number 45. The album, which critics described as “hard-edged power pop,” spawned several hits, including “Goodbye Girl,” “Cool for Cats,” and “Up the Junction.”

In 1981, the band released their most popular single, “Tempted.” The song became their highest-charting single in the U.S., peaking at number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 8 on the Mainstream Rock chart. The song is featured in the band’s fourth effort, East Side Story, which achieved silver status in the U.K. after selling over 200,000 copies.
